An urban retreat cradled in the embrace of majestic oaks.

In the heart of urban Austin, a forward-thinking builder and a superfan of light and shadow made a great choice.

Instead of building an emotionless, monster-beast of a spec house by maxing out buildable land and bulldozing the site’s trees, she decided to create a tree-hugging vessel of a home that’s a showpiece for her self-described “shadows of the day.”

As fellow enthusiasts of light and shadow, we were honored to join the team.

While shadows and daylight are the stars of the show here, we can at least say we designed their set. We chose white oak for the flooring and cabinetry, and went through several whites to make sure we had an all-hours star for the walls. The bathrooms are made up of 2 distinct personalities: the first is clean and modern for the primary suites, and the second is earthy and moody for the secondary bedrooms and offices. When light peeks in from one of the many skylights, it dances on a variety of soothing and calm materials. What a hoot.

Whether it’s the morning sunlight streaming in or the soft glow of dusk, it’s a space that feels just right at any hour.

Shadows of the day? More like shadows for every beautiful moment.
