A properly Bavarian Biergarten finds a home in East Austin. Prost, y’all.

In the heat of Munich’s 19th century summers, the people of that great city planted gardens and horse-chestnut trees above cellars to keep their Bavarian lagers cool enough to ferment underground. Above those breweries, the biergarten was born.

Several thousands of pretzels, sausages, schnitzels, and dunkels later, in a hot hot city across the globe, the concept needed to be imported.

Jesse, a longtime collaborator, and his partner Konstantin Prinz von Bayern (aka Koko) the Prince of Bavaria (yes, the actual Prince) approached us with the idea of a shaded oasis attached to a warehouse that brewed beer. Having just returned from Oktoberfest in Munich, this was an enthusiastic yes project for us.

Tapping into the historic German culture of Central Texas, we found a colorful and whimsical blend of materials to build and decorate an outdoor space for 400 people. We set the tone with custom red and white striped umbrellas, twinkling lights, and of course the requisite biergarten benches, made in Germany from dried sprucewood and steel in the historically correct green.

Inside, the existing structures became an open, airy beer hall and brewery with a robust kitchen. The extra visual layer came in the form of custom-painted graphics by local artists Drew Lakin and Lauren Dickens, adding requisite East Austin energy.

MANY THANKS

Jesse, Koko, and crew. Thanks for bringing the fun and keeping it German.

Drew and Lauren, you make such cool things. It makes it all come together.

Ken and the Archive crew - you guys are so wonderfully chill to work with. Great work on the steel stuff especially.

Chad, I love the pictures. Thank you thank you.
